Our Purpose, Vision, and Mission

Purpose

St. Luke Lutheran Church exists to proclaim Christ, nurture faith through Word and Sacrament, and serve our neighbors with love and justice.

The purpose names why we exist right now. It is foundational and stable, anchoring the congregation’s life across seasons of change. While ministries and strategies evolve, this purpose remains constant.

Vision

Christ at the center.
Belonging without exception.
Joy that sings hope into the world.

Centered in Christ’s love, St. Luke Lutheran Church seeks to be a vibrant, inclusive community where everyone belongs, gathered by Word and Sacrament and sent into the world for the sake of our neighbors. We strive to be a place of refuge and rejoicing, where shared life, music, and creativity inspire us to bear witness to God’s grace and God’s call to justice, reconciliation, and peace.

The vision names who we are becoming, and the future God is calling us toward. It gives the congregation a shared imagination rooted in Christ, shaped by hospitality, and oriented toward the healing of the world.

Mission

In this time and place, the people of St. Luke name our mission priorities as follows:

  1.   We will support one another through vibrant worship, mutual care, and learning at all stages of life
  2.   We will minister to the Cornell and Ithaca College communities by providing a safe, welcoming environment for spiritual practice, discourse, and service to others
  3.   We will be a resource for the greater community by providing an accessible space for meetings and community events, and by fostering civic improvement
  4.   We will serve those in need locally, domestically, and abroad by nourishing the hungry, helping the impoverished, working for justice, and striving to empower the marginalized

Mission names how we live out our purpose in this particular place and season. St. Luke continues to discern its mission through prayer, conversation, and practice.

Why Purpose, Vision, and Mission Matter Together

  • Purpose grounds us in why we exist.
  • Vision inspires and unites us around who God is calling us to become.
  • Mission directs our daily work and helps us set priorities in this season.

Together, they help St. Luke discern faithfully, act intentionally, and remain centered on Christ while responding to the world God so loves.
